Ironmongery

Choosing the Right Ironmongery for Your Project

At County Building Supplies, our branch teams help builders, carpenters, landscapers and DIY customers find ironmongery for doors, gates, timber projects and general property maintenance. From hinges and brackets to locks, latches, bolts and gate hardware, choosing the right product for the application helps create a secure, practical and durable installation.

Which Type of Ironmongery Do I Need?

The best product depends on what you're installing, where it will be used and the level of support or security required. Our ironmongery range covers a wide variety of everyday building and maintenance applications.

• Brackets and plates are used to support, reinforce or connect suitable timber and building components.
• Door furniture includes the hardware used to operate, secure and finish doors, such as handles, latches and related fittings.
• Gate furniture includes products such as gate latches, bolts, hooks and other fittings used to secure and operate gates.
• Hinges allow doors, gates and other moving components to open and close while providing the required support.
• Rope and chain can be used for suitable securing, handling and general-purpose applications.
• Locks and latches provide different levels of closure and security depending on the door, gate or application.

Choosing Gate Hardware

Gate furniture needs to suit the size, weight and construction of the gate, as well as the environment in which it will be used. County Building Supplies stocks gate hardware including auto gate latches, Brenton bolts, cabin hooks and hasp & staple fittings in suitable finishes for a range of outdoor applications.

When choosing gate hardware, consider the fixing surface, opening direction, level of security required and whether the product will be exposed to weather.

Black or Galvanised Ironmongery?

Many ironmongery products are available in different finishes. Black hardware is often chosen for its traditional appearance, while galvanised products provide additional corrosion resistance for suitable external applications.

The most appropriate finish depends on the location, expected exposure and appearance of the project. Outdoor hardware should always have a level of corrosion protection suitable for the environment.

Choosing the Right Hinge

Hinges should be selected according to the size and weight of the door, gate or panel being supported. The number of hinges, fixing method and hinge type can all affect how well the installation performs over time.

For heavier doors or gates, use hardware designed for the expected load rather than choosing a hinge based on appearance alone.

Locks, Latches & Security Hardware

Different locks and latches provide different levels of security. A simple latch may be suitable where the main requirement is keeping a gate or door closed, while applications requiring greater security may need a suitable bolt, hasp and staple or locking system.

Always consider how the hardware will be fixed, the material it's being attached to and whether the product is suitable for internal or external use.
